Light Arc — BMW Group
The 13 freeform fins were designed and manufactered in GRP sandwich material with an overall surface of over 230 m² (2475 sq ft).
In order to enable dual-side CNC milling of the differently domed PUR foam fin cores with individual surface areas of up to 5 m² (54 sq ft) we developed a modularly applicable, adaptable core mounting.
All edges, joints and drill hole edges were cut in five axes. With that, we were able to meet the ample requirements in terms of panel shaping and sheered edges. The structure was dimensioned by means of FE analysis method and reassured by component test. Its weight is approximately half as much as that of a comparable conventionally built metal/wood composite structure.
