Wall-door-element — HEWI
Excitement on 1 June 2006 at Bauwerk in Cologne: presentation of an 11 m2 three-dimensional GRP object designed by the Berlin-based Graft architectural practice.
The one-piece wall element was developed within the scope of "Kunst.stoffe", a plastics workshop initiated by HEWI in conjunction with the architecture journal AIT. Hahlbrock produced the prototypes in glass fibre-reinforced plastic in just four weeks. A CAD surface model supplied by Graft served as the basis for the production.

To give the impression of a door opening, a groove with constant depth in the shape of a door was machined into the curved surface. The recess on the left side of the wall element is intended as a seat; the edge is therefore reinforced accordingly.
Owing to the severe folding in certain areas, which prevented straightforward moulding, part of the surface had to be manufactured separately, attached afterwards and ground flat. However, after finishing the surface, the joins were no longer detectable.
The object was given a high-gloss finish of white automotive paint which was applied in several coats and rubbed down between each coat.
