Restoration of the Nana-Sculptures by Niki Saint Phalle
The "Nanas", three sculptures by Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) set up in Hannover in the mid-1970s, were restored in a complex process using Hahlbrock fibre-reinforced plastics.

The internal steel framework was refurbished and protected against further corrosion. The concrete inside, which had been part of the foundation and was a major contributor to the corrosion process, was removed completely. A stainless steel construction matched to each sculpture would from now on ensure the stability of each "Nana" on her riverside plinth.

Following an elaborate mapping of all damage by MPA Hannover materials testing laboratory and an analysis of the original colours, the GRP outer skin was ground off, covered with a new GRP skin and finally faithfully repainted to match the original.
Caroline, the first of the three "Nana" sisters restored, was returned to her original place in the autumn of 2004. Sophie and the chunky Charlotte followed in May 2005. Since then, Hannover's three famous ladies are shining again in all their original glory on the banks of the River Leine.
